While we know that recreational anglers are becoming increasingly familiar with the various aspects of fisheries conservation and many are actively embracing conservation measures as they pursue their hobby, "catch and kill" tournaments targetting the so-called big game species of shark, tuna and billfish are still being held.

The fish brought to the dock during these tournaments invariably end up in a local landfill, and their waste is nothing more than a byproduct of the tournaments of those same sportsfishermen who are actively engaged in a lobbying effort to put the United States' commercial longline fleet out of business because that method of fishing has a bycatch of sharks and billfish.

As a means of quietly protesting this hypocrisy by these monied "sportsmen," Dewey Hemilwright, a longline swordfisherman from North Carolina, has designed and is offering for sale "T" shirts, sweatshirts and tank tops highlighting this wasteful practice. The illustrations on the shirts were made from the photos on our sportsfishing tournament page that the above link will take you to.

The company is Keep Fishing T's at Box 667, Wanchese, NC 27981. The phone number is (252) 473-6886 and the fax is (252) 443-1497. Whether you are a working fisherman or a recreational angler, if you are against the wanton waste of our fisheries resources that these "catch and kill" tournaments so graphically represent, this is a great way to show how you feel.
