Distant Water looks at the rise and (partial) fall of the factory tawler fleets that fishing nations used to harvest the tremenduous concentrations of fish found in particular areas of the world's oceans.

Mr. Warner made trips on a number of different types of "distant water" vessels, observed how each fished and got to know their officers and crew. It's interesting to compare the fishermen described in Distant Water with those in Captains Courageous and in Men's Lives. While much else about commercial fishing has changed, it appears as if the type of men who become commercial fishermen hasn't.
